The European Free Alliance (EFA) was founded as an alliance of regionalist and civic, democratic nationalist parties in Europe in 1979. In 2004 the EFA was recognized as a European political party. At the time of composing this Learning Object EFA has 40 members in 16 member states and one candidate member state.

In the European Parliament the EFA forms a fraction with the European Green Party. From Estonia belong to this fraction as EFA's representative Indrek Tarand. There are no EFA representatives in other EU institutions.
