4.3. European Liberal Democrats (ELDR)
European Liberal Democrats (ELDR) consists of European liberal-democrat and reform parties. The Liberal Democrats created their European political family in 1976 in view of the first European elections. In 1993 ELDR was established as a true transnational political party. ELDR consists of 56 member parties across Europe.
To the ELDR belong the European Liberal Women Network (ELWN) and the representative organization of young liberals LYMEC. ELDR coordinates the activities of the European Liberal Forum (ELF).
Five Prime Ministers of the European States belong to the ELDR: Andrus Ansip (Estonia), Mari Kiviniemi (Finland), Artur Mas, Catalonia (President of Generalitat de Catalunya), Lars Løkke Rasmussen (Denmark) , and Mark Rutte (The Netherlands). The ELDR sits in the ALDE Group of the European Parliament - Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe to which group belong 84 + 1 MEPs (Borchardt 2010, 51). Embracing also the European Democratic Party, the ALDE is consideres as third in influence political force in Europe. With the roots in the ELDR belong to the European Parliament Kristiina Ojuland, Siiri Oviir and Vilja Savisaar-Toomast (Estonia); Carl Haglund, Anneli Jääteenmäki, Riikka Manner and Hannu Takkula (Finland); Ivars Godmanis (Latvija); Leonidas Donskis and Viktor Uspaskich (Lithuania). 43 per cent of the MEPs representing the ELDR in the European Parliament are women.
Of the 27 Commissioners eight have liberal-democratic background – the Vice President and Commissioner of Transport Siim Kallas; the Vice President and Commissioner of Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes; the Commissioner of Research, Innovation and Science Máire Geoghegan-Quinn; the Commissioner of Trade Karel De Gucht; the Commissioner of Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström; the Commissioner of Environment Janez Potočnik; the Commissioner of Economic and Monetary Affairs Olli Rehn, and the Commissioner of Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou.
