11.6 Conclusions/Suggestions
Comparative analyses of mesocosm experiments and ecosystems responses
are appropriate tools to define dose-response relationships and to
determine and understand thresholds of nutrient inputs. Similar
approaches, but involving long-term records, of which Europe has a few,
could be used to define `points of no return'. Evidence of major
differences in the magnitude and nature of nutrient inputs to different
regions in Europe exists, as well as differential responses of the
coastal ecosystems therein. On the basis of these differences, it is
suggested that the unit of analysis (and specific legislation) should
be coastal biogeochemical provinces, which are still to be defined
